they do best in morning sun - afternoon sun is too strong and will give them sunburn. If you want to keep it in your office, you can get a grow light.
My sister in-law is an orchid freak. She puts a small amount of fertilizer (1/8 teaspoon, I beleive) in a gallon of water and waters once a week. This is good if the soil is like a moss soil, which most orchids are planted in. You just don't want them to be soggy wet. I believe there is soil specifically for orchids, if you want to repot them.
The blooms should last for a few months too.
enjoy!
yup. yup. yup. the one that dave got me for valentine's has no flowers now, but it's still aliiiive. hehe. and those guidelines above are all good. actually we let it dry out to the touch and then water which takes a bit more than a week. and no, you never want to let it sit in water or be soaked for days. and we haven't used any fertilizer yet, but will soon so that it will flower again. methinks there are special orchid fertilizers that you can spray on and it soaks through the leaves and this is somehow more desireable. i dunno.
the only thing i can think of to add is that after all of the flowers have opened and then gone, cut the whole flower stalk off at the place where it seems to emerge - top of leaf area. technical names are so not my style. heh. and this will encourage it to send up another flower stalk. i think there's more to that getting it to bloom again thing, like putting it in an area where the temp will go down or letting it be more dry for awhile or something, but i can't remember right now. when dave gets home, i'll make him comment :)
the flowers, if it's the same sort as the one i have - phalaenopsis - are really really neat and they do last for a long long time before they fall off there. i have to say that this typre of orchid has greatly boosted my confidence and i might even attemt maintaining another! :)
